Pam and Peter’s story: investing in a greener world
Living high on the hills above Todmorden, West Yorkshire, Pam and Peter are certainly close to nature. But living ‘in the middle of nowhere’ hasn’t blunted their enthusiasm for a just and sustainable world. They originally invested in Ecology Building Society in the 1980’s because “at the time it was the only ecological investment we could find.”
As their garden contractors business grew, Pam and Peter continued to save with Ecology. The couple are committed to living sustainably, and Ecology matched their beliefs and principles.
They believe passionately in growing and eating their own fresh food and even prepare their own medicinal herbal remedies. But the world beyond their own home matters dearly to them too.
Peter is a First Nations American Indian by birth, and his heritage and background mean he has seen the effects of injustice and exploitation first hand. This has only served to strengthen Peter’s belief in the need for a just and ethical society. They save with Ecology because, as Peter puts it, “We wanted to ensure none of our money was supporting nasty regimes – guns or exploiting the native peoples of the world.”
I wanted our money to go to help the earth and the people on it. So it gives me great pleasure knowing that our money is invested with Ecology for the good of the planet.
