Ecology Building Society wins What Mortgage Award

Ecology Building Society is delighted to have taken third place in the What Mortgage Awards category of Best Value National Building Society over 10 years. Although one of the country's smallest and youngest building societies the Ecology is celebrating its twenty-fifth birthday this year and this award is proof that they are only getting better with age! The awards identify those lenders who provide the best value mortgages over 2, 5 and 10 year terms. Ecology is more than happy to be ranked in the 10 year category, as this is confirmation that they offer their members and new borrowers long-term value for money. Ecology prefers to focus on providing value throughout the mortgage term and avoid any gimmicky upfront, short-term deals aimed only at attracting new customers.

In additional to the National Building Society category, Ecology was the 6th Best Value Lender out of all 74 lenders who took part in the awards.

Although a winner in a 'mainstream' competition, Ecology Building Society isn't your run-of-the-mill lender and doesn't provide mortgages for 'standard' properties. Instead it specialises in providing mortgages for properties and projects that benefit the environment - this may involve the renovation of a run-down property, conversion of a disused building or construction of a new eco-home. Ecology also lends for the installation of renewable technologies, and on properties that other lenders consider to be unmortgageable such as timber properties, houseboat moorings, woodlands and organic smallholdings.

Chief Executive Paul Ellis, in responding to news of the award, said: "We are pleased to receive this further recognition of our policy of providing long-term value to our borrowing members. It demonstrates that it is possible to follow a truly mutual lending policy and that green lending doesn't have to be at a high premium".
