It’s Big Energy Saving Week!

Household savings in a jam jar

As you know, at Ecology we do our best to minimise energy use: from our office’s efficient design to our specialised lending on low-impact housing projects, often featuring bold energy-saving technologies.

We are passionate about raising the standard of efficiency in the whole housing stock, but of course we know that not everyone has access to these sustainable designs and technologies. Nevertheless, we believe there are many ways in which we can all benefit from lower bills and higher energy savings, whilst still enjoying a comfortable home!

As we are now spending more time than ever in our homes, we would like to share some of the best energy-saving tips we have found:

  • Spending 1 minute less in the shower every day, a family of four can save around £75 a year on utility bills, plus replacing an inefficient shower head for an efficient one can save you around £70 on energy and £115 on water bills per year.
  • Every halogen lightbulb that you replace with an LED bulb can reduce your carbon footprint by around 5kg of CO2 per year.
  • Closing your curtains at dusk stops heat escaping through the windows, and draught-proofing small gaps can help you save around £20 a year on energy bills.
  • Turning down your main thermostat by 1 degree can reduce your energy bills by around 10% and your carbon footprint by approximately 320kg of CO2 per year.

Perhaps there is a suitable green energy tariff you can switch to or a smart device that can help you get your savings up. Whatever it may be, there is help and advice easily accessible to you and ‘Big Energy Savings Week’ is all about highlighting it.
