Earth Day 2026: Small Actions, Real Carbon Reductions

A road through a deep green forest mottled with sunlight.

This Earth Day, Ecology Building Society is reflecting on the progress made in 2025, and how small, targeted actions are adding up to meaningful change.

Over the past year, the Society has taken practical steps to reduce its carbon footprint and strengthen its social impact. From decarbonising heat and hot water at Head Office, to reducing energy use, offering free EV charging and halving total waste volumes, the focus has been on action – not ambition alone.

These changes sit alongside continued work to evolve products, better serve underserved communities, and embed sustainability across day‑to‑day operations.
Our Progress in 2025 at a glance

  • 50% reduction in total waste volumes at our premises
  • 540 litres of waste cooking oil converted into green energy
  • 79% recycling rate, with non‑recyclable waste reduced to 21%
  • 37.3% reduction in financed emissions intensity since the 2019 baseline
  • 15,000 members, supported by people‑powered, values‑led banking

Together, these steps matter – for our climate, and for society.
