Ecology launches £1,000 Community Fund to support good causes in Rhondda Cynon Taf
Grassroots groups invited to apply for grants that strengthen local communities
Ecology Building Society is launching a £1,000 Community Fund to support good causes in Rhondda Cynon Taf, as it prepares to open its first-ever branch, in Porth, South Wales.
Applications open today, Monday, 9 March, with not-for-profit groups able to bid for grants up to £100 for projects that:
- strengthen community connection,
- improve shared local spaces,
- encourage environmental awareness or sustainability, or
- support young people or vulnerable groups
Gareth Griffiths, Ecology Building Society’s Chief Executive Officer, said:
“One of the reasons we chose Porth as the location for our first-ever branch was because of the fantastic community spirit in the region. Ecology is all about creating positive impact and the launch of this Fund is our way of supporting others who want to do the same.”
Eligible applicants include charities, residents’ groups and Community Interest Companies (CICs). Funding can support activities such as local events, environmental improvements, and equipment. Each application can bid for a maximum of £100 in funding.
Last month, Ecology announced that it would open its first-ever branch in Porth, South Wales, as part of its mission to restore access to essential banking services in communities abandoned by big bank closures.
The Ecology branch in Porth will have innovative kiosks that provide residents and business customers with free access to cash deposit and withdrawal services, for both Ecology and non-Ecology customers, alongside face-to-face support and a range of savings and mortgage services.
A dedicated community space will also be available for local groups to host activities, talks and events that strengthen connections and support local wellbeing.
Gareth added:
“The response since announcing the branch has been overwhelmingly positive, showing just how valuable community banking is for people and businesses.
“Work to renovate our new home in Hannah Street is going well and we’re counting down to our opening in April.”
Ecology is encouraging residents to follow the Ecology Building Society Porth Branch page on Facebook for updates, including the official opening date. The page also hosts the application form and eligibility for the RCT Community Fund, which can also be found at www.ecology.co.uk/porth
The closing date for applications is midnight on Monday, 23 March 2026 and successful applicants will be notified after this date.
